A Glance Back At This Week 1-5-16 to 1-8-16
Welcome back!  I hope everyone enjoyed some good family time. The students came in on Tuesday happy and ready to get back to learning.

This week we worked on . . .

ELA
Our grammar skills this week focused on. . .
  • pronouns - I, you , he, she, it, we, they, us, we, etc...
  • long vowel sounds with silent e
  • adding s and es to words
We continued reading fiction and non-fiction books about animals. With these stories students will. . .
  • ask and answer questions with key details.
  • identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text.
  • continue to identify and compare the text features in fiction and non-fiction texts.
MATH
We worked on. . .
  • understanding that the two digits of a two digit number represents the amount of tens and ones.
  • 10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones called a ten.
  • comparing two digit numbers based on the meanings of the tens and ones digits and recording the results of the comparisons by using >, <, and = symbols.
SCIENCE
We continued to. . .
  • identify the different body parts that different animals have
  • compare and contrast the body parts of two different animals.
LEADER AND ME
Every student at some point in the year will be the Star Leader of the Week. The Star Leader gets to do some special things throughout the week. In addition, the Star Leader shares ways that in which they have embraced the 7 Habits. Below are some pictures of the our last two Star Leaders.

MYSTERY READER
We have had several Mystery Readers over the last few weeks. This is a beloved part of our week. The students cannot wait to see who will walk through the door to read to the class.

Some pics of us learning throughout this week.

We wrote about our favorite December memories. We first used a digital graphic organizer to organize our thinking, then we began writing and illustrating our work.

We learned about place value by putting sticks into bundles of tens and ones. We then practiced this new concept on a fun app called Cookie Factory.

HERMIT CRABS!!!
We are learning about animal characteristics and what animals need to survive. Our very own hermit crabs arrived this week. We get to take care of them by providing them with everything they need to survive. We will get to observe them and watch them grow.

Some catch up pics!
Here are some pics from our last day before winter break. It was a day of lots of fun activities. We had the Deerfield High School Choraliers come and sing. The teachers played the fifth graders in volleyball, and of course to end our day, we had a fun holiday party run by Mrs. Carder and Mrs. Becker.

Stay Tuned, there's always more to come!
