Last Week 

SSR

Last week we started something we refer to as SSR. It stands for Sustained Silent Reading. SSR gives us additional opportunities to incorporate even more time for students to read independently at their instructional level. It is a quiet time and all students are engaged in their box of books. Students have been looking forward to this time each day.

I Have - Who Has

I Have - Who Has is a game that we have played with a variety of different skills. This week we played it to practice our ability to identify tens and ones. Students had to understand the different forms of writing place value to keep up with the game.

Groundhog Day

We learned about Punxsutawney Phil. The prognosticator of all prognosticators. We watched the video from last years reveal of Phil's weather prediction at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. We wrote about whether we would or would not like to see six more weeks of winter and why. Have your child also remember tomorrow to bring in the data he/she collected from his/her families on whether they would or would not like "Phil" to see his shadow. 

Brain Boost

This we took the district common assessment in both math and ELA. Brain research shows that exercise before assessments jump starts your thinking. We jump started our thinking with a GoNoodle workout before we completed each assessment.

Mystery Reader

Did you hear that the Crayons came home? Mr. Cohen came to read a classroom favorite, "The Day the Crayons came Home." Students cannot get enough of these silly crayons.

Fireman Mike Returns

Fireman Mike returned to do the second part of our fire safety lesson. Students are now well informed of what to do in case of an emergency. As a teacher I learned something I did not know. If you call 911 from your cell phone, which many of us may do in the event of an emergency, the 911 dispatch will not automatically know your address. It is very important that your first grader know his/her address and be able to say repeat it out loud. Please make sure that you go over this with your child. 

This Week - 2-1-26 to 2-5-16

ELA

We are beginning a new theme in ELA. This theme is on leaders and what makes a strong leader. This week will begin by brainstorming our ideas of what we think makes a good strong leader. This week we will read both the "Lorax" by Dr. Seuss and "Officer Buckle and Gloria," by Peggy Rathman. With these two books we will. . .

• Identify words and phrases that identify strong feelings.
• Compare and contrast adventures of characters in stories.

Grammar

• Review long vowels with a silent "e".
• Identify vowel teams the produce long vowels (ee, ea)
• Identify "y" as having a long e sound in some words
• Object pronouns (me, her, him, it , you, us, them)

Math

Our math curriculum continues to spiral back to concepts learned.

This week we will revisit. . .

• Understanding the meaning of the equal sign
• True and false equations
• Missing addends and minuends and subtrahends

Science

This week we will learn. . .

• Ways plants and animals take in food, water, and light
• How plants and animals stay safe

Leader and Me

This week will refocus on Habit 2 - Begin with the end in Mind. We will listen to the story. "The Very Busy Spider" By Eric Carle to see how the spider began with the end in mind. Students are becoming so well versed in these habits that even when we focus on one habit in a story, they always pick up on several more habits that are also identifiable in the story.

A Short But Productive Week!

A Look to This Week 1-25-16 to 1-29-16

While we were off Monday and had a 1/2 day on Friday. First graders in Room 5 got a lot of learning done. I don't have a lot of pictures, but here's a brief summary of some of the things we did this week.

Fireman Mike

Fireman Mike from the Deerfield Fire department came to first grade classrooms to teach us about fire safety. We went into Mrs. Cacioppo's room to listen and learn with her first graders.

Super Leader of the Week

Our Super Leader did a great job showing us different ways she can be a leader. She read a Dr. Suess favorite "Green Eggs and Ham." she created some great clues for her Mystery Bag and showed us how talented she is on the piano.

Hermit Crabs

We have watched our hermit crabs in their habitat but have not seen them do too much. This past week we decided to get up close and personal with our little shelled friends. We took them out and observed them on the rug. Our little friends were happy to get to stretch their "crabby" legs and the students were beyond excited to watch.

ELA

Using different texts we will. . .

• Continue to identify main idea and key details in non-fiction text.
• Look for inferences.
• Find text evidence by going back into the text to prove answers.

MATH

In math we will. . .

• review finding missing "addends" in addition ( __ + 5 =9) and the missing "minuends" and "subtrahends" in subtraction ( __ - 5 = 4) ( 9 - 5 = 4). 
• identify information on a graph and using the information to solve problems.
• continue to identify numbers in the hundred's, ten's, and one's, place.

SCIENCE

We will continue to. . .

• look at different animals and the senses they need and use in order to survive.
• make observations of our hermit crabs and what senses they are using to survive.

LEADER IN ME

This week will re-focus on Habit 1 - Being Proactive. We will listen to a story called "Thunder Cake" by Patricia Polacco. After listening to the story, we will have a class discussion about emotions and how we can use being proactive to help us with our different emotions.

A Look Back At Our Week

Coin Wars - Kindness Connection

The past two weeks classrooms have been participating in coin wars. Classrooms were competing to raise the most money to do a project through the Kindness Connection. The money raised was used to purchase materials to build stuffed animals that will be distributed at hospitals and emergency rooms to comfort children.

First graders and third graders partnered together to stuff animals, create cards and decorate a bag for hundreds of children who visit hospitals.
