What a Great Day!

Today was of the those that you can see the excitement in the students faces as they walk through the door in the morning and stay with them all day long.

While we did do some business as usual activities this morning, we did them in a fun way.

Spooky Sums
Students solved some number sentence problems on some magic paper. First students solved the number sentences. Then they used black watercolor to paint over the ghosts to check to see if their answer were correct. Students loved this activity.

Halloween
Of course the highlight of the day. . . our costumes. We all looked so good.

Some of us dressed alike.

Halloween is in two days. Please remember that costumes should not be worn to school. Students will change into costumes after the lunch/recess.

Book Clubs
One goal for my first grade students is for them to facilitate over their own book club groups. This process will involve breaking down the fundamentals of a what a book club does into small teachable parts through modeling and practice practice practice. This week we have begun the process. We began by learning about what an explorer does and what treasures are. We defined explorers as people who search for something. We defined treasures as things we cherish or find interesting. Students worked in partner groups and assumed the role of explorers as they looked for treasures in a variety of wordless picture books. Before we began our exploration we learned about what good book partners do.

Good book partners:
  • sit side by side
  • use a level 1 whispering voice
  • look for treasures in the pictures
  • take turns
  • ask questions
Take a look at the pictures and listen to some of the conversations that took place over that last couple of days. Students did an amazing job exploring the treasures in these books.

Grammar
This week we learned about the ending "es". We learned how when nouns and verbs end in s, ss, z, zz, ch,tch, sh, and x that we add es to the root word (base word) and not s. We also learned about syllables and how to determine how many syllables are in a word. We started by watching a cool video that had some neat strategies to help us.

Guided Math Groups
We worked in guided math groups today. We rotated around to different activities. We worked on our number sense, graphing skills, adding of number sentences with 3 addends and solving of story problems with 3 addends.

Science
We worked on our iPads in our interactive science notebooks. We identified pictures that showed the roots of a plant and identified the purpose for the plants roots.
