This Week at  a Glance 10-26 to 10-30

Friday will be our Halloween celebration at school. Students should bring their Halloween costumes to school. We will change into costumes after the lunch recess. There will be a parade beginning at 2:00. Weather permitting the students and staff will be parading around the school. Parents can come watch outside as we parade, however they will not be allowed in the school. We will have our class party following the parade. Mrs. Cohen and Mrs. Decker are our party helpers on Friday.

Please remember if you want your child to participate in the PTO sponsored Pizza Lunch on Friday you must sign up on the PTO website: www.kiplingpto.com

Believe it or not these are the last six required sight words for first grade. This week I will be giving the students a packet of word wall activities on Monday for homework. The packet of activities will be due on Friday. My recommendation is for students to complete one activity each night.

In the upcoming weeks we will have weekly homework with different activities that will continue to reinforce the reading, spelling and usage of these words.

Phonics
  • sh and th sounds
  • adding es to words that end with s, ss, zz, ch, sh.
  • ks making the /x/ sound
  • ea making the short e sound in some words
  • final blends
Grammar
  • nouns as the subjects of sentences
ELA
We have completed our first unit in ELA on Friends and Families.
This week we will be doing a review of all things learned. We will also be doing our end of the unit writing assignment using what we have learned about friends. At the end of the week we will be taking our first district wide common assessment for ELA on what we have learned thus far.

Math
This week we will be solving word problems with three addends and sums less than 20. At the end of the week we will take our first district common assessment in math on what we have learned thus far.

Science
This week we will be focusing on the different parts that plants have. We will be looking at plants; roots, stem, leaves, flowers and fruit.

Leader in Me - Habit 7 - Sharpen the Saw
Students will learn about the last habit this week: Sharpen the Saw.
This habit focuses on taking care of yourself and making sure you have balance in your life.
