Some Highlights of Our Short Busy Week

Team Read
Today we started an exciting new program called Team Read. Team Read is a literacy model where every student is reading and or writing four days a week for thirty minutes. There are four teachers in the room and students are divided into four groups. In these small groups students read and reread stories, discuss stories, write about stories, and do word work. The students did an amazing job this week. It is incredible that all twenty students were reading at the same time and the room was relatively quiet. Students were focused, on task and engaged in their small groups.

Chunky Monkey
Students learned about a new reading strategy called Chunky Monkey. This monkey friend helps remind students to look for chunks of words they may know in a word that seems unfamiliar. Knowing the chunks can help students decode the word they may think they don't know. Students practiced this strategy by highlighting chunks they found in words in a little booklet.

Words Their Way
We do a word sort program called Words Their Way. Based on a writing inventory, students are placed into groups that focus on specific needs in each student's developmental spelling.

Math - Ten Frame Fun
Students used a ten frame app to create as many ways as possible to make the number 10. It was a fun way to learn. Students were able to choose shapes and colors to fill their ten frames. I was so impressed at all the things students discovered about the app that I didn't even know. They are so tech savy.

Mystery Reader
Mrs. Decker, Maddy's mom, came to be our Mystery Reader today. She read a favorite story of Maddy's called "A Birthday for Frances." Mystery Reader is always a highlight of our week.

 Have a great weekend!
