Time is Ticking Away Quickly

I can't believe it is May 9th. We are in the home stretch of a great year in first grade. I wanted to make you aware of a couple of upcoming events.

But first. . . A big thank you to all Room 5 families. Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week. I had this beautiful orchid delivered to my class during the week.
Thank you all for your thoughtfulness.

School Supplies
A message from Rachel Chernoff regarding school supplies.

ORDER YOUR SCHOOL SUPPLIES BEFORE MAY 27!

Now is the time to order your school supplies for the fall.  Make it easy on yourself and order through the PTO. Teachers like it when parents purchase through this program because every child has the same set of supplies, ready to go on the first day of school.  Parents like the program because it is so much easier than running from store to store to get just the right item.  And, through bulk purchasing, we are able to save you money too! Orders will be delivered right to your child’s classroom before school starts.

To order, visit:  DeerfieldCoalition.com

Pancake Breakfast

Kipling's annual pancake breakfast will be Friday, May 20th. It is a free event for all Kipling families. It is from 7:00am until 8:30 when school begins. There will be pancakes, sausage, donuts, fruit, and juice available. It is a a great way for families to start the day together. I hope to see you all there.

                                                                                   Today

We had a great Monday. We spent time this morning reviewing the bossy "r". Students had fun playing a bossy "r" game in small groups.

Students also worked as partners to build 2D and 3D shapes out of glow sticks and Play Doh. They did a great job and showed a lot of perseverance as they tried to create these shapes.

Last Week

Fieldtrips
We had Cinderella After the Ball  - Take two. This week we actually did make it to the play at the Marriott Lincolnshire Theater. Check out your child's Kidblog to see what he/she wrote about the play. They all had a really good time and enjoyed the production.

We also had an in school field trip. High Touch High Tech came to talk about sound and how it travels. Students got to experience how sound travels through a variety of different methods. Here is a peek at some of the things they did.

Paragraphs
After learning about what paragraphs are, students worked in small groups to read an article and identify where paragraphs began. Students did a great job on this first time activity.

Math
Students used a pattern block app to combine shapes to make different shapes.

Attributes
Some students took the concept of attributes to another level as they played this fun, but challenging attribute game called SET.

Our own Mrs. Cozza
Our administrative assistant Mrs. Cozza came to teach us how shapes are used in make beautiful quilts that people use everyday for a variety of reasons.
